Cabinet Considerations
When remodeling or building a kitchen, the type of cabinets to install is often the first thing that comes to mind. There is no doubt the style, color and construction of the cabinets is a major component of kitchen design. They are often a major portion of the remodel budget, so thoughtful consideration is in order.
Cabinets are a primary example of the marriage of form and function. Cabinets must not only be beautiful, they must function well. Accordingly, there are multiple things to consider when choosing cabinets.
Scale
One of the first things to consider is the size of the room. Cabinets should be in scale with the room. Tall, open ceilings can accommodate extra tall wall cabinets for storage, or leave room for decorative display areas above the cabinets. Larger rooms and higher ceilings can also support more decorative and ornate trim and door panels.
Function
A second thing to consider is how the room is most often used. Today’s kitchens are often multi-purpose. Along with food preparation, eating areas are more and more common. Many recent home floor plans don’t even include a formal dining room, but instead, incorporate larger, more open kitchens which include an eating area.
Small office areas, craft areas and even homework areas can be incorporated in today’s kitchens. Specialty cabinets can create a functional space for these activities.
What kind of storage do you need? Large open pantry cabinets are used for brooms etc. Cabinets designed for spices, wine and large containers are all available. Open shelves or glass paneled doors can display collections. Take the time to consider how your family will be using this room and choose your cabinets accordingly.
Appliances
If you are remodeling an existing kitchen, don’t overlook the possibility of relocating large appliances. A visit from your designer can help you determine the feasibility of rearranging your stove, refrigerator and dishwasher. Keep in mind this may require relocating plumbing and electrical service, but the new design possibilities that come with these changes may be worth the extra effort.
Kitchen islands are still a popular design option. Consider locating extra sinks, wine coolers or cook tops on your island. Islands offer a separate work area for households with multiple cooks.
Cabinet Styles
There is a wide variety of door and drawer styles and finishes available. This is where your personal sense of style comes through: traditional, classic, colorful, sedate, retro or modern. Available styles are almost endless.
Browse through catalogs, magazines and visit showrooms to get ideas. New cabinet configurations come out all the time. Give yourself enough time to become familiar with available products and cabinet construction options.
Hardware
Cabinet hardware will add the finishing touch to your cabinets. Hardware can dress a style up or make it more casual. Don’t overlook this opportunity to personalize your cabinets.
Hardware should be purchased near the same time as your cabinets. Having the hardware available on install day will avoid a second install trip to your home. While you may be tempted to install your own hardware to save a little money, a professional installer will make a template of your cabinet faces and ensure each handle, knob and fastener is installed straight and true.
Measuring for Cabinets
You will want a professional to measure your kitchen and help you choose cabinet pieces. Cabinet measurements are very specific and time and money will be saved by letting a professional help you with this from the start. Don’t be afraid to visit with your designer and installer multiple times during the decision making process. The more you discuss and consider your options, the more confident you will feel in placing your cabinet order, and the more satisfied you will be with your final purchase.
Delivery and Installation
Take the time to ask questions and read the documentation that comes with your order. Know whether the cabinets will be delivered to your house, or to the retailer. Be clear about arrangement for delivery. Depending on where you purchase your cabinets, you may have as little as 24 hours to inspects the delivery and make sure all cabinets are damage free.
An average size kitchen cabinet delivery can easily take up the space of a one car garage. Make sure you are ready on delivery day. Have enough space for storage of the cabinets in out of the weather.
Installation Day
You should arrange the installation dates with your installer or retailer. At the time of scheduling discuss what is expected of the installer. Arrangement will have to be made regarding what entry you want used, parking, and waste removal.
You will want to prepare your house for installation day. Clear the pathway from the storage area to the installation area. You may want to lay down canvas drop cloths to protect floors. An average kitchen cabinet install can take from one to two days. Stay in touch with your installer and communicate any concerns or requests.
